A Complete Guide to Activate and Use McAfee VPN

A VPN or virtual private network creates a secure place to use the internet with privacy, anonymity, and safety. A VPN allows you to do anything online without losing your privacy. In simple terms, it creates a private connection for you to browse online.

Further, the internet is not a safe place nowadays. It has many flaws that don’t make you private online. And it can be a matter of advantage for hackers, the government, and advertisers. There are many companies that provide VPN services. You can get a VPN as a standalone service or with your antivirus software. If you have an antivirus subscription like McAfee Total Protection or LiveSafe, you can take advantage of the McAfee VPN service. Moreover, stay with this post to learn how to set up and use McAfee VPN.

Note that you get McAfee VPN on Total Protection and LiveSafe subscriptions if you have enabled auto-renewal. One more important thing is you don’t get McAfee VPN in all regions.

If you have McAfee VPN access, you will need to activate it. Here are the steps you need to see for VPN activation.

  1. Find access to the LiveSafe or Total Protection Console.
  2. Locate the primary Action Center slide or the tiles found near the bottom of the Home tab.
  3. A Get Started button will appear under the Action Center and a Set up under the VPN tile if you haven’t activated the McAfee VPN yet.
  4. You have to tap on the Get Started or Setup option to activate the VPN. A progress bar will appear showing the installation process. These options can also be found in the Privacy tab.
  5. If you have already installed the VPN, you will not see the Setup button on the tile. You reach the McAfee VPN window using the Get Started option if the service has already been installed.

After installing the McAfee VPN, if you want to turn it on or off, you can do it without accessing the McAfee subscription. Let’s see how you can do that.

  1. Locate the McAfee icon and right-click on it. You can find the icon under the notification area.
  2. Choose to Turn off VPN or Turn on VPN depending on what you want to do.
  3. Once you select the right option, you will see the VPN as Connected or Disconnected
  4. If you see a message like Couldn’t connect, you can wait and try again to connect.

Checking the McAfee VPN status is easy. You can check it anytime you want. Here are the required steps.

  1. Access the LiveSafe or Total Protection Console
  2. Select the My Privacy section. You will see the VPN status in the side panel on the left-hand side.
  3. The status is turned On if the service is active. And if it isn’t installed yet or turned off, the status appears as Off.

You can use the VPN settings page to set up the VPN based on your preference. For instance, you can set up a VPN service to make yourself safe from untrusted networks. McAfee doesn’t require you to turn on the VPN if you are on a trusted device or network. Moreover, you can also define a network or device as trusted using the Settings page. You can manage these settings at any time.

  1. Launch the LiveSafe or Total Protection console.
  2. Hit the settings gear icon located on the upper right.
  3. Go down and tap Virtual Private Network (VPN).
  4. Hit Settings
  5. Under the Protect Me Online option, you can choose either I’ll do it myself, Automatically Connect on Wi-Fi only, or Automatically Connect on Wi-Fi and LAN.
  6. You can add the current network to the list of Trusted networks using Add the Network I’m on option.

McAfee VPN can be used on many devices, depending on the license you have. If all licenses have been used, you need to free up one. You can make a license available by removing a device from the list of trusted devices. After getting a free license, you can now add the new device. Do any of the steps below to remove devices.

  • To remove the current device, hit the X icon and then tap Turn off VPN and remove
  •  Hit the X icon on the device and then tap Remove.
